Dear St. Louis Old Boys,

May I take this opportunity to wish the Salesians, Fathers, teachers, students, members of our alma mater and fellow old boys, good health under this unprecedented moment.

Our Annual General Meeting was originally planned for February 15th 2020.  Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we had to postpone until it is safe to hold the meeting.  Also, as we have to ensure our alma mater remain safe for HKDSE, we would like to apologize for any inconvenience caused due to our short notice in changing the AGM venue.

I am pleased to report our work carried out in the past 15 months since our last AGM on January 12, 2019, even though 2019 was undoubtedly a challenging year for everyone in Hong Kong.  The Council directors and Co-opts of this term have made their utmost efforts to accomplish the events and activities as summarised below:

Time flies as we enter into the 59th year of SLOBA.   Coordinating old boys’ activities continues to be our primary responsibility.  In the past 15 months, we hosted various old boys’ gathering including Annual Dinner, sport competitions such as table tennis and tennis, talks such as SLOBA Exchange and Medical Link Dinner.  Some of the talks were jointly organised with the SLS Parents-Teachers Association to include parents and students.  We visited our clergymen regularly and provided medical care if needed.  We also invited our Alumni Manager, Mr. Yeung Kit-man, to share his views on the future of St. Louis in one of our SLOBA Exchanges.  We supported our alma mater’s Thanksgiving Dinner to thank all past supporters of SLS and helped fund the 16th Hong Kong Group’s 80th Anniversary Gala Dinner, etc.  The photos below highlight some of these activities:

Apart from supporting our old boys, we also provided support and sponsorships to our fellow students in these areas: Youth Club, scouts, study groups, Thanksgiving Nite, talks organized by Prefect Association together with Aloysian Fellowship, FDAA awards, SLOBA awards, visits to operators at HK airport, Talent Time Singing Contest and the Graduation Dinner of Class of 2019, etc.

We will continue to provide support to our fellow students to broaden their horizons and we welcome any kinds of contributions from our old boys.

The Hong Kong Federation of Don Bosco Past Pupils organised the soccer competition閃電盃友校舊生足球賽 in January 2019 at Tang King Po School.  We were represented by our team of 2016/2017 old boys and achieved 3rd runner-up.   They also organised an annual golf tournament in November 2019.

Our Rector Major of the Salesian Father Angel Fernandez Artime, who is the 10th Successor of Don Bosco, visited Hong Kong and Macau in August.  We joined the Salesian Family dinner gathering organised by the Salesians China Province and sent Father Angel our 90th Anniversary Commemorative Publication as a welcoming gift.

Old boys from previous school teams were invited by Salesian English School Don Bosco Old Boys Association (SESOBA) in January 2020 for their inter-school table tennis tournament and all teams enjoyed the games.

The COVID-19 pandemic has hit hard worldwide and especially Italy, home of the Salesians.  We have utilised our contingency budget and, together with SESOBA, have sent thousands of masks to branches of SDB that are in need of support.  In March, we sought donations from old boys to contribute surplus boxes of masks and protection supplies to the clergyman and underprivileged families.

We had an unprecedented start to 2020.  Due to social distancing restrictions, our traditional Annual Dinner after our Annual General Meeting had to be cancelled; and our Home Coming originally planned on Feb 15, 2020 had to be tentatively delayed to the 4th quarter of 2020.  We are very grateful that our company articles were updated by the 2017 Council, empowering us to hold meetings by electronic means so that important motions can be resolved during this pandemic.  We have held a total of 10 Council Meetings in this 15 months’ term, 6 of them electronically.  Lastly, I would like to thank all 2019 Council Directors, especially Jason, Ricky and David, Co-opt members and old boys for their efforts contributed; we could not have such an unforgettable year of events without them.

May God bless you all!

Thank you!

Allen Chan
