Appeal Letter for Physics Scholarships - November 2024

Physics Scholarships Initiatives

Dear Aloysians,

The Work Group for the “Rev Fr LEE Hei Lung Joseph Physics Scholarship” (李海龍神父物理學獎學 金) would like to appeal to all fellow St. Louis School Old Boys to support the Scholarship by generous donations. Details of the Scholarship are given in the summary below.

We sincerely hope the said Physics Scholarship will motivate students in S4, S5 and S6 to take up the subject of Physics zealously and strive for their best performance.

We strongly believe that achievement of good results in the subject of Physics will provide a sound foundation for further academic development in the field of science, under the insurgence of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies in the world today; and science will remain a notable strength of St. Louis School.

Your kind support of the Scholarship will be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

The Rev Fr LEE Hei Lung Joseph Physics Scholarship Work Group

Summary of Information

1. Name of Scholarship

Fr. LEE Hei Lung Joseph Physics Scholarship 李海龍神父物理學獎學金

2. Purpose of Establishment

Fr. LEE Hei Lung Joseph is the first science teacher for many old boys of St. Louis School and the best Physics teacher ever. Besides teaching, he encouraged students to participate in various scientific extracurricular activities, including joint school science exhibitions, photography societies and radio societies. In those days, during recess and after school, students often went to Fr. LEE’s office to listen to music, enjoy the air-conditioning, learn photography, take photos, and install vacuum tube radios in the laboratory. Students learned a lot through such activities while also pursuing their interests. Fr. LEE inspired students to develop interest in science and the ability to organize activities, helping students spend very fulfilling and happy days at St. Louis School (“SLS”).

It is the fervent wish of a number of 1968 graduate (Form 5) students of SLS to show their deep respect to Fr. LEE by establishing a scholarship in memory of Fr. LEE, as a small contribution to their alma mater to help encourage the younger generation in the subject of Physics, and continue Fr. LEE’s spirit of supporting students. The Rev Fr LEE Hei Lung Joseph Physics Scholarship was thenceforth formed, and officially inaugurated and formally established at a gathering at St. Louis School on 19 June 2024.

3. Fund Raised

Thanks for the generosity of the many donors, an amount of more than HK$400,000 for the founding fund of the Scholarship has been achieved as of the date of inauguration of the Scholarship. Donors were given due recognition with the award of medals categorized as follows:

(a) Donor donating HK$5,000 – 9,999 recognized as Silver Donor;

(b) Donor donating HK$10,000 – 19,999 recognized as Gold Donor;

(c) Donor donating HK$20,000 – 29,999 recognized as Platinum Donor;

(d) Donor donating HK$30,000 or more recognized as Diamond Donor.

A plaque of Donors will be affixed at a suitable location at the Physics Laboratory of SLS with names of donors (in English and Chinese) engraved thereon.

Whilst the initial founding fund for the establishment of the Scholarship has been achieved, it is hoped that more donations can be received in future so that the Scholarship can be sustained as prizes are given out with the passage of time.

4. Selection of Awardees

Awards are to be given to students with the best performance in Physics in Secondary 4 and Secondary 5 and to students who have achieved Level 5** in HKDSE Physics, each year, as recommended by SLS. Final selection of awardees will be done by a Selection Board composed of representatives from the School and the Work Group. Apart from academic excellence, the Selection Board may, particularly for candidates of Secondary 4 and Secondary 5, consider other qualities such as participation and leadership in extracurricular activities related to Science, in particular Physics.

The above criteria for award of the prizes are subject to review from time to time by the Work Group, with a view to expending the donations received in the best way possible to encourage students to achieve good results in the subject of Physics and advance the level of academic excellence in Physics as a whole for SLS.

5. Award Program

Each awardee will receive a cash award and a certificate of achievement, as follows:

(a) For Secondary 4, there will be one or two awardees, or none at all if there is no suitable candidate. The cash award per awardee will be HK$1,000.

(b) For Secondary 5, there will be one or two awardees, or none at all if there is no suitable candidate. The cash award per awardee will be HK$1,500.

(c) For HKDSE candidates, there will be one or more awardees, or none at all if there is no suitable candidate. The cash award per awardee will be HK$2,000.

There will also be a Plaque of Awardees engraved with the names of awardees for each year, put up in the Physics Laboratory of SLS. The scholarships will be presented to awardees on the Speech Day of SLS every year, witnessed, if possible, by representative(s) of the Work Group.

6. Management of Fund Raised

The donations received and the distribution of cash awards are to be managed by the St. Louis Old Boys Association Foundation (SLOBA Foundation), a non-profit organization with good experience in managing various scholarships, which will be authorized to manage the fund raised.
