It is our honor to have Charles Chong (Class 1976) as our guest speaker of the coming Warm Table Dinner at Club Lusitano on 31 May 2012 (Thu).
In common with many Aloysians (Catholics or non-Catholics), Charles was an active member of 善會 under the guidance of Fr. Gelosa. The noble spirit of Don Bosco rooted deep in his heart. Salesian priests, as followers of Don Bosco, practiced it in life day-in day-out in front us. Their empathy with the under-privileged left long-lasting influence to generations of Aloysians. (side note for graduates of 70s-90s: 上有鮑思高, 下有伊思高)
Today, the grass root population in Hong Kong can afford less day-by-day because of stagnant income and increasing inflation. Many of them used to be skilled workers or craftsmen but they became irrelevant when manufacturing started migrating out of Hong Kong. Working poverty or social welfare is the tough choice to make. In either case, their children would face strong head wind.
To respond, Charles formed L Plus H Community Interest Co Ltd (CIC) that operates both charitable and profit-making businesses. Under CIC, a factory with 90 employees is set up at Tuen Mun to produce knitwear and leather goods. It creates a variety of jobs for workers, designers and technician, as well as retains high-quality craftsmanship of Hong Kong. The products are supplied to well-known global brands.
In 2010, L Plus H CIC founded We R Family Foundation Limited, with Li Ka Shing Charity Foundation, Chan Kwan Biu Memorial Foundation and UBS Optimus Foundation. To turn weak into young leaders with a sense of purpose is the mission of We R Family. Currently, it is operating a project (333 Learning Companion Leadership) that serves 700+ children living on poverty line yet not receiving government aid. The four learning centers of this project are located in areas where need the service most - Sham Shui Po, Tin Shui Wai, Sheung Shui and Kwun Tong.
